Canon Point: End of Season 2/OVA
Background: The series starts proper with En Yufuin and Atsushi Kinugawa, third years at Binan High School, relaxing at the bathhouse that they would come to frequent more often throughout the series, they were talking about chikuwabu and it's place in the world. Apparently they talk about nonsense like this all the time, but this time, something new happened. A space portal opened up and a pink wombat fell right into the water! Well, it only looked like a pink wombat as it insists that he's not a wombat. Regardless, it's as soon as he lands here that he engages the two in some minor conversation and it's from here that the two politely refuse.
But the wombat insists, wanting to make them protectors of the Earth with love. It's here that Yumoto Hakone, a first year student, joins in, outright jumping into the tub because he wanted to cuddle the furry creature and Atsushu and En make their escape. Thinking that was the last of the weird evening, they head home. However, the following day, their homeroom teacher walks in with a familiar pink wombat tucked under his arm. They are both very surprised and try to avoid him after class is over as he tries to recruit them yet again. Thankfully, Yumoto appears again and the two older boys make their escape, going to the "Earth Defense Club" room. The sign is old and no one knows who made it but it had been there since even before they started using it as a hangout. It's also here that we meet Io Naruko and Ryuu Zaou, second year students, already inside and doing what they always do. Checking the stock market and flirting with girls via text, respectively. After they spend a few more moments talking, contemplating what to do now that they may not be able to use the room anymore due to lacking a fifth member and a faculty member to make it a real club, in comes in their homeroom teacher and Yumoto cuddling Wombat. And it's also here that he gets fed up with asking for them to be protectors and outright just makes them protectors via bestowing them with magical love bracelets, Lovracelets. They've become magical boys, known as Battle Lovers, and there's nothing they can do about it.
It's from here that the show becomes a monster-of-the-week show with general shenanigans between the boys. No real story arc takes place aside from who is causing the monsters, something they find out is actually the Student Council (aka the Conquest Club) whom had their own space animal telling them who to make a monster. Where the Battle Lovers are all about love, the Caerula Adamas are about negativity and hate. Neither knows the others identity as space technology is also obscuring their faces and voices, but they do eventually find out within the last episode as the reason the head of Conquest Club, Kinshiro Kusatsu, seems to hate the Earth Defense Club so much and it's all to do with a past grudge with Atsushi. Things do work out and feelings are talked out and it's also here that we find out a rather startling twist.
Years ago, the space animals had wanted to destroy Earth and wanted to do it via a space reality TV show called "Can I Destroy the Earth?", only it was Yumoto's older brother, Gora, who was a Battle Lover then and because he kept defeating the monsters, the show was cancelled. The space animals wanted to try again only with the Conquest Club and Wombat did what he did last time, made Battle Lovers to ensure that the Earth would not be destroyed. Unlike all the other space animals, he loved Earth and didn't want it destroyed.
The boys teamed up and defeated the animal producers and thus the Earth was saved. Although Wombat left, the Lovraclets stayed. And after a few months of no monster sightings, they do start up again with a pair of twins (also known as the VEPPer Twins, Galactic Idols) move in next door to Yumoto and Goro's home. Honestly, season 2 can be summarized like this: Once the twins move in, it's essentially the same as season 1 with the monster of the week deal. Only they find out just who is sending these monsters much sooner but don't really do much about it as they were pretty harmless otherwise. The twins have a grudge against Yumoto much like Kinshiro did with Atsushi, so the season focuses primarily on him for the most part. The only thing that happens out of the ordinary are the new outfits, the Conquest Club studying abroad, and that the twins were fans of Gora in his Battle Lover days, too much of a fan it seemed as they hated Yumoto for even being his brother and wanted to take Gora back with them. They are Galactic Idols so it's not known exactly where their home planet is, just that they want Gora forever with them. They are soon defeated by the Battle Lovers and decide to stay on Earth to reform.
The OVA has them dealing with the fact that a few of the cast, namely Atsushi Kinugawa and En Yufuin of the Battle Lovers side and Kinshiro Kusatsu and Ibushi Arima from the Conquest Club are graduating. It's not really seen as a big deal, it's the way of things when it comes to high school, after all. But it seemed to hit Yumoto pretty hard who, when yet another monster shows up, can't even find the love to fight. It even distracts the monster! He doesn't want things to change, he doesn't want the third years to leave but after talking it out amongst themselves, and the monster as well, they soon revert the monster back to normal (especially after finding out that it's the same hedgehog and squirrel duo from Season 1 and 2 that caused it all for revenge!). The VEPPer twins even let them know that they want to do their own thing and leave their Galactic Idol life behind to be better. The Battle Lovers, Conquest Club, and Galactic Idol twins bonds deepen and graduation goes on. It's also here that Wombat decides to leave Earth for good, taking the two villains with him and the Battle Lovers wish him a safe journey, give him a homemade bento that brings Wombat to tears of love, and wave him farewell at the train station.
To space. Also, the OVA was basically a glorified clip show, but there was some plot at least.
Personality: Ryuu Zaou is a very laid-back individual. He also really only has one thing on his mind: Girls. Specifically, getting dates and spending his free time either dating or chatting with them via phone or text. The very first scene has him spouting his catchphrase, "Women are life!" and it's honestly very easy to see shortly after. He's shown to have double and triple-booked dates and doesn't seem to be worried at all on how to fix the situation. Make no mistake, though. He's all about treating women right, despite appearances he's not a playboy or womanizer. Ryuu is actually very much a romantic, so his intentions are always pure. He generally always finds something cute about a girl, even though there are things he can't stand, like persistent callers (a girl wouldn't stop calling or texting him, not believing he was actually in the middle of club activities when he actually was) and those that cry (although he will try to find a way to make them smile again). Regardless, Ryuu will insist that any annoyances he has with girls, or how sometimes they can be a hassle, that this is part of their cuteness.
Ryuu is also the type to care about his appearance. Given that he's actually the second most enthusiastic about being a Battle Lover, it's mostly because he believes he looks cool in the costume he was given and he'll be in even more trouble now that he's so much cooler, not really all that perturbed at being made a Battle Lover without his permission in the first place. He also doesn't like it when Yumoto takes the limelight, in episode two he lamented at the end how he didn't get to show off because Yumoto essentially did all the work. It isn't that he's vain or narcissistic, although he can sometimes come off this way such as in an episode where they were turned into children and then toddlers, all he really cared about as that he looked uncool in his now too big Battle Lovers costume and that "that" was now smaller too. He really has no shame sometimes, often saying embarrassing lines (even cheesy pick up lines) without being embarrassed at all. He's pretty straightforward in that regard, although it's hard to fault his sometimes overbearing flamboyancy when he's just so genuine and heartfelt about it.
This honestly goes hand-in-hand with his very positive and jovial personality. He does think highly of himself, praising himself for looking good or cool but it's all because he has the confidence and it's simply fact to him. He knows what he likes and he's very comfortable with who he is. He will often defend this with confidence as well, which could honestly explain how he gets so many dates (or claims to get so many dates, it's debatable if he's actually dating as many girls as he claims since he's never been seen with a girl, something that was straight up pointed out in the show) but also how he does get along with the Earth Defense Club. He values their friendship quite a bit and is honestly just content with hanging out with them even without having to do any battles or anything. His relationship with Io is actually the one most highlighted throughout the show, as despite their nearly opposite personalities, they are actually best friends and have been since before the show started. It's also hinted within the show that he may actually having feelings for his best friend, despite all his girl talk and even having a girlfriend earlier on in Season 2. They are rarely seen without the other most of the time and Ryuu took it hard when Io abruptly decided that he wanted to leave the Earth Defense Club.
This leads to Ryuu also being passionate to go with his already outgoing personality, when Io decided to quit the Club when offered a place on the Student Council, citing he'd make more money there, Ryuu was the first to react and feel betrayed. It's here we also see just why Ryuu is Battle Lover Vesta, his element being fire and thus, having a bit of a temper. His temper flared as he reprimanded Io and even went into battle as he was still angry with Io for leaving, not at all thinking about the consequences. His temper also often flares around Gero Akoya, a student who is narcissistic and often gets under Ryuu's skin with that narcissism. It's not that he believes himself better looking or anything than Akoya, but it's the narcissism he hates and often wants to get back at the other, to often unsuccessful degrees.
Regardless, his friends are just as important to him as girls are. Ryuu sees them as important factors that really can't be compared to anything else in his life, and he'll do anything to help them out when they're in trouble.

Emotion Sample: The girl in front of him looked amazed as he pulled the cherry knot from his mouth. "See! It's not so hard."
He gave her a smile, setting it down on the table and sliding his milkshake over to her, to which she giggled and blushed. Didn't matter what world Ryuu was one, girls were just so cute and fun to go on dates with! He grinned wider as she sipped the drink they were sharing and the scent of cherries filled the air. He blinked and looked around, was someone having cherry pie? His happy mood was also producing little cherry blossom flowers above his head, the flowers bloom and the petals being gently pulled into the air by the gentle, autumn breeze.
"Huh? But these bloom in the spring..."
The girl before him giggled again, but now out of amusement as she slid the drink back over. "I forgot you were new, Ryuu! It's your emotions! They're showing with how you're feeling. Do the flowers mean your happy? Or the cherry smell? I didn't know you liked cherries that much!"
Ryuu laughed and scrunched his nose at her from the teasing. "Well, how can I not be when I'm a date with such a cute girl, Sera-chan! Still, this seems a bit much."
"You'll get used to it, I know you will!"
"Well," He said with another laugh and gave her a wink, causing her to blush once more as he sipped the shake. The petals, thankfully, disappeared as they flew by and none got into the drink. The cherry fragrance still lingered. "If you're there to encourage me, then I'll make sure to do so!"
